The State have ditched Ireland’s policy of neutrality by choosing sides in this war without any regard to the will of the people and our Irish Constitution.
We the people have not yet voted by Referendum on whether we wanted to abandon our neutrality and join the EU Common Defence Policy.
The State have consistently advocated for support of the EU’s Common Defence Policy in Ukraine and by doing so have undermined Article 29(4)(9) of the Irish Constitution which requires a People’s Referendum.
The EU approved $543 million of military aid to Ukraine on 13th April bringing the total funds to the Ukrainian Armed Forces to €1.6 billion so far.
A recent Russian TV report showing nuclear attack on Ireland is a consequence of the State igniting a fire through their actions and words in supporting one side in a conflict.
The State have the audacity to speak about their role in upholding democracy whilst flagrantly undermining our Irish Constitution and the will of the People of Ireland. The People of Ireland have made it clear through polls conducted by the Irish Times/Ipsos that there is overwhelming support for Irish neutrality.
Is this the same democracy that NATO brought to bear on Afghanistan, Iraq, Yemen, Libya, Syria and Serbia in recent years?
The thinking people of Ireland are not swayed by the suggestions that the Russian nuclear threat is all the more reason why we need to join an EU Common Defence Policy.
The thinking people of Ireland are only too aware that this will mean we are dragged into every war at NATO’s behest and that this will only serve to accelerate threats to our small island. It will not be the children of politicians who will go out and die on foreign battlefields. It will be our children and future generations. It is not the politicians and their wealthy allies that will suffer the hardships of the consequences of war. It will be the People of Ireland.
The Ceann Comhairle Sean O’Fearghail TD and the Cathaoirleach of the Seanad Senator Mark Daly are travelling to Ukraine next week to address the Parliament to ‘demonstrate EU support’. This can only fuel the fire that has already been carefully ignited by the State.
Now is the time to speak out against this address to the Ukrainian Parliament in the absence of a Referendum of the People of Ireland on the EU Common Defence Policy.
